Colorful Foods Plus Whole Grains Can Maximize Your Nutritional Regime

The healthiest foods in nature are the generally colorful foods. Orange, red, green, purple and even brown foods offer the peak dietetic value. There are very few foods that are “white” that offer superior nutrition. Cauliflower and jicama are both white and wholesome but the majority of white foods, particularly white flour and white rice are nutritionally empty.

Years ago, most breads and flour products were made from highly healthful whole grain flour. This flour is numerous shades of brown but never white. Whole grain flour is made from the entire seed including the fiber-rich outside bran layer and the germ. However, whole grain flour has a propensity to spoil quicker and also to attract weevils. In an effort to safeguard baked goods for a longer interval of time, white flour was invented.

So white flour that was made from only the endosperm of the grain seed was created. This flour is obviously white but it is also frequently bleached with chemicals in order to make it even whiter. Regrettably, these days many of the breads and other foods made from flour that we find on our store shelves are made from this nutritionally devoid flour. Many supposed “wheat” breads are actually made from enriched flour rather than whole grain flour. In order to get the highest nourishment we need to make sure that the first element listed on the label is “whole” meaning that the flour is made from a whole grain whether it is wheat, rye, oatmeal or any other type of grain.

The more processed a food is the less wholesome it tends to be. White foods are likely to be absent in all of the key nutrients. White rice is similar to white flour in its dietetic value. Whole grain foods, with all of the natural fiber and nutrients, are the most healthful and these foods are never white but always hues of brown.

Multicolored foods are vital when it comes to nutrition. Purple fruits and vegetables offer critical antioxidants counting anthocyanins and resveratrol. Orange vegetables and fruits offer beta-carotene and the green vegetables and fruits provide a good for your health collection of vital minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. The most nutritious diets are the most multicolored diets.

So if you want to take full advantage of your nutrition, do away with all of the white foods, with the exception of cauliflower and jicama, of course. Increase your ingestion of colorful vegetables and fruits and include lean protein sources such as lean meats, fish or poultry or if you are a vegetarian you can include a variety of beans and legumes for a protein source. And make sure that your bread is made from whole-grain flour and not enriched flour.
