Retirement Gifts For Golfers

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

There is a commonly-held belief that golf is the pastime and sport of entrepreneurs and businessmen. It also has the reputation of being exclusive and elite and not being available to ordinary blue collared workers. However, this is not really true, since modern technology and globalization have brought this so-called elite sport into the reach of normal people.

This is because you don’t need to get hold of expensive equipment to play. Unlike big game fishing and polo which need a lot of resources – a boat or a horse respectively – golfers just require a set of golf clubs, which are reasonably affordable these days. Bearing this in mind, retirement gifts for golfers and aspiring golfers are more easily thought of.

Personalized retirement gifts to personalize golfing equipment is quite easy. You could easily make personalized gifts by embroidering such items as golf club pouches or caddy covers. These can be knitted, if you are a knitter or by any similar craft which may require different materials.

Another idea is to tap into the fashion aspect of golfing which means to focus on the things worn by a golfer. You may even set a new trend in golfing apparel using a lively imagination and an interesting clothing design for your retiree.

Common gifts. The most usual method of buying a retirement gift for golfers is to go to the nearest sports shop and get your retiree one of the things sold there. It may sound a little impersonal to just get the retiree a commercially available gift, but then this may actually prove really useful, if the retiree is still a beginner golfer. Maybe you might want to get him a set of golf clubs as it is the basic requirement to be able to play golf.

Furthermore, you may find some other accessories that your retiree golfer may still need but then perhaps you could also contribute your imagination on what things can be made to enhance the golfing equipment he may already have.

Shop bought golfing equipment is handy too, eg, you could make your retiree feel good, giving him a set of famous golf clubs, making him look like a pro.

Gags and Jokes The fun part of choosing to give a gag gift instead is the humour such items can create. It also adds to the lighter side of the golf-playing retiree’s party and his friends will be able to join in with smiles, laughs and jokey comments too.

The gag gift should be bought quite carefully as the gag gift may represent a sensitive matter for the retiree, especially if he is still a beginner. Joke present for golfers may be misunderstood and discourage their golfing education if they are upset by the idea emphasized by the gag present you have given to them.

However, to veteran players who already know the game inside out, the gift of a good joke present on their retirement day would be very amusing because they would already see golfing not only as a way to relieve their stress and get some exercise but to actually just have some fun as well.

People ought to see retirement presents for golfers as just a simple method of encouraging your golfing friend to appreciate the funny side of life after his working life has ended.

Mother\’s Day: The Origins

Friday, March 5th, 2010

They say a mother\’s love comes second to God loves; or a mother\’s love is God\’s love being manifested in the world. These are very strong and bold convictions, but history will show us the undeniable importance and honor for mothers, rooting from the very same conviction. The contemporary Mother\’s Day celebration in the United States was created by Anna Jarvis; which later on became a commercialized holiday. This is a probable cause of the increase in sales of Mother\’s Day gifts.

It is in Greece where Mother\’s Day emerged from a festival honoring Cybele, most of the historians claim. Cybele is a great mother of Greek gods. Different kinds of Mother\’s Day gifts were given during the festival for her honor. The festival also lasts for three days from March 15 to March 18. Moreover, the celebration of the festival was held around the Asia Minor and eventually reached Rome.

Moreover, in Rome, there is an ancient Holiday called Matronalia and was dedicated to Juno an ancient Roman goddess, the protector and special counselor of the state. She is a daughter of Saturn and sister (but also the wife) of the chief god Jupiter and the mother of Mars, Minerva and Vulcan. Mothers during those times were also given Mother\’s Day gifts.

There is also an important correlation between Mother\’s Day and Christianity. The Mothering Sunday, or known as Laetare Sunday in the Anglican and Catholic liturgical calendar is observed every fourth Sunday of the Lent season to honor the Virgin Mary and the \”mother church\”. Even before, this celebration is observed by giving Mother\’s Day gifts, tokens, and relinquishing of certain female tasks such as cooking and cleaning; other family members would take over the tasks as an appreciation.

During the 1870, Howe\’s Mother\’s Day Proclamation was written by Julia Howe to call for the celebration of Mother\’s Day in the United States. It is however has a political drive to react to the carnage of the American Civil War and the Franco-Russian War. In its first day of celebration, Mother\’s Day gifts, usually roses are given to mothers all around the United States.

With or without Mother\’s Day gifts, the most important thing to remember is why we celebrate this once in a year holiday – to honor our mothers. They don\’t need extravagant gifts. A kiss, hug and a sincere \”thank you\” are all it needs to make them feel special and truly appreciated. No amount of flowers, sweets, and gifts could ever replace true sincerity and most especially a mother\’s love.

Inexpensive Wedding Favours

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

If you are holding a large wedding, that is one with many guests, the cost of wedding favours can be quite considerable, if you do not set a strict budget. One immediate method you could use to cut the cost of your wedding favours is to give one to each couple or single, rather than one to everybody who comes. The first decision to make is how much can you afford in total and then divide that by the number of guests in total and then divide it by the number of couples and singles.

This method will make it easier for you to decide what you are going to do: buy for everybody; buy for couples and singles and keep the rest for something else or give to couples and singles but buy more elaborate gifts. If you still find that there is not a lot of money to go around, you will need to look for lower-priced wedding favours. I will give you a few thoughts below to get you going.

Candles can be very effective, inexpensive wedding favours. If you buy in bulk, you can get some really lovely candles at very reasonable prices. You could get scented candles, maybe with the same smell as the bouquet the bride carried. You could also consider purchasing personalized ribbons to tie attractive bows around the candles and the ribbons could have your names and the wedding date on them.

Candy or chocolate is another kind of inexpensive wedding favour. There are many ways to go down this route. You can have the wrappers of popular candy bars custom-made; you could buy fairly expensive chocolate in bulk and wrap it up in a special way yourself or you could buy small boxes of gourmet chocolate.

Giving packets of flower or vegetable seeds is also an economical way of giving a useful wedding favour. Again, you could give seed packets of the flowers in the bride\’s bouquet. The seed packets could be wrapped or boxed with your own special logo, names and wedding date. You could present them in a pot or tray too in order to make it even easier to sow the seeds.

A pen or pen and pencil set is also a reasonably inexpensive way of giving wedding favours. These pens can also display your wedding details such as names and date.

However, I am Welsh and so my favourite wedding favours are love spoons in miniature, say four inches long. Love spoons were given in Wales by a suitor to his beloved for hundreds of years and many love spoon carvers will make mini versions by hand for a small amount of money. These love spoon wedding favours can also be inscribed with the wedding details as they are typically made out of wood.

Another nice touch is to add a stamped, self addressed envelope to your wedding favour present, with a short note asking the recipient to get in touch with you soon, so that you do not let too much water go under the bridge.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on many topics, but is currently involved with Welsh love spoons, and Wales in general, please go to our website at Welsh Products Online, if you are too.

History of Coin Jewelry

Monday, March 1st, 2010

From the start of history, people have produced jewelry out of stuff acquired in the surroundings. Everything from rocks, plants, shells, and of course metals such as platinum and silver, nevertheless one may surprise you… coins.

Coin jewelry isn\’t really new. In fact, there exists historical evidence of loose change getting cut and drilled from olden days. From the advent of coinage, loose change in the form of coins were generally drilled or pierced as a practical feature in order to be put on round the neck or affixed to an item of apparel.

Currently, there are several techniques to the actual methods that coin jewelry is done, however the main 2 ways are usually whole in addition to cut coins. In cut coin jewelry, the actual coin itself is changed in some manner by simply cutting, pounding, shaping, or drilling it. Whole coin jewelry in essence endeavors to protect the original coin by positioning it in place with the jewelry settings.

It\’s legitimate to say that old coins can be irrevocably damaged by coin jewelry making, however the final production is usually so lovely that the worth is really a lot more valuable than an original coin most of the time. For example, consider the lowly penny. The penny is just valued at just one cent, however could be converted into a piece of artwork that is worth a lot more. Almost all coin jewelry will undergo wear and tear because they are worn because of friction, natural oils along with salt in epidermis, along with other kinds of degradation.

Obviously, we recommend that you utilize coins that aren\’t so uncommon that the sacrifice of using them for coin jewelry far exceeds the aesthetic value of the piece. Nevertheless, keep in mind that preserving coins in the form of jewelry will be a method to show off the artistry and design of the actual coins themselves. In reality it will provide you with ways to connect yourself along with the historic meaning of those coins. As an example, if you are a Civil War buff, then you definitely could possibly think it incredibly delightful to wear a necklace having US half dollar from 1861.

There are numerous ways that you could take coins, and use them as jewelry decoration. They could be formed into necklaces, bracelets, earrings, money clips, tie tacks & bars, cufflinks, anklets, plus much more!

Even though it may be true that producing jewelry out of coins causes scarcity of coins themselves, it\’s also accurate it likewise boosts the appeal of the coins. The appreciation level is not really as elevated as when a coin piece is stuck away in a drawer somewhere.

The Growth of California and the Forty-Niners

Friday, February 26th, 2010

In January 1848, James Marshall was inspecting the building of a saw mill for his boss, when he noticed an unusual rock glinting in the upturned soil.

He was not certain whether it was gold or not and did not want to get people\’s aspirations up. So Marshall tried to break the yellow rock with a hammer. It did not split, but it did dent. just like gold would. The woman who was cooking meals for the saw mill construction team, tried another test by boiling the rock in lye.

They boiled it all day, but it did not change colour. So, they passed the rock over to the mill\’s owner, Mr. John Sutter, who also conducted a few tests. In the end, everyone agreed that this rock was indeed gold.

It seems that the Sierra Nevada Mountains hid huge stores of gold, but that over tens of thousands of years, erosion had loosened up gold nuggets and the mountain streams washed them down to the bottom of the mountains. Sutter\’s property was situated between two rivers and so was likely to yield great wealth.

Sutter had ideas to build an agricultural empire on his 39,000 acres of land, so he asked his employees to keep stum about the find. However, as is to be anticipated, word leaked out. In due course news of the gold strike reached the small town of San Francisco.

There, a newspaper publisher shouted around the streets: \”Gold from the American River!\” and within three days of the news arriving, 400 of the 600 inhabitants had set out for Sutter\’s land. It was a groundswell and by the end of the year, gold prospectors had traveled to California from as far away as Mexico and Chile.

When word of the gold strike got to the east coast, President Polk confirmed the discovery. It was December 1848 and \’The Gold Rush\’ became a national and even a global event. The gold miners of 1849 and later years became known as forty-niners.

What has to be borne in mind is though, that most people, who came from Canada, Mexico and the eastern United States came by wagon train, as there were not locomotive! This meant a arduous trek of between six and nine months

Nevertheless, at least 32,000 people actually walked to California in 1849, and about 44,000 more got there in 1850. Others, such as South Americans, faced an arduous journey by sea. They underwent storms, shipwrecks, hunger and thirst, disease, and overcrowding and after all that, some still had to undergo mule rides through jungles and deserts! In spite of everything, in less than a year, about 40,000 people arrived in San Francisco from overseas.

The new arrivals constituted a dramatic change in California\’s population, because in 1848, California had had about 100,000 residents, most of whom were Native Americans, but within two years, the state populace more than doubled but the variety of ethnicity increased tens of times.

Some people found gold and made a lot of money in the Californian riverbeds, but most people did not become rich in the Gold Rush. When gold was found, the hoard was usually cleared quickly. James Marshall had little success as a miner, and he died impoverished. John Sutter, who had once owned 39,000 acres, left California in heavy debt after miners flattened his land.

In fact, it was simpler to make money selling shovels and other provisions to the miners. Most people lost everything they had, so they stayed to work the vast expanse called California or to set up businesses. By 1856, San Francisco had a very multi-ethnic population of over 50,000 people and California had become the most exhilarating state in the country.
