How Often Should You Work With a Personal Trainer?

As a personal trainer for 10 years, I have worked with clients as infrequently as once a month and as frequently as 6 times a week. A good rule of thumb is the less experience and knowledge you have about exercise, the more necessary it is to meet frequently especially in the beginning. Maybe you have been working out a long time but you still need that accountability so one weekly appointment is enough. Some people are motivated to workout on their own and just want to ‘check-in’ once a month to get some new material. There is no right answer because it depends on your particular needs and wants. Below are my recommendations:

If you are totally new to exercise, schedule 2 or 3 appointments a week for at least 3 weeks. The beginning of a new attempt to start exercising is a critical time. Most people fall off in the first month due to injury or lack of motivation. Think of all of the people who make new years resolutions to get in shape. You know as well as I know that the odds are not with them that it will last. If this sounds familiar, you have to break the pattern!

If falling off your exercise schedule is a pattern for you then I suggest having once or twice weekly appointments with your trainer indefinitely. Here’s why: An appointment with your trainer once a week makes you accountable and that’s good. I have clients that I’ve worked with once or twice a week for 9 years and counting! Before they started working with me, their exercise came in waves. Not now. I keep them on track. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had clients say to me “I never would have worked out today if we didn’t have this appointment.” Be honest with yourself, there’s no shame in admitting that you just won’t do it on your own but then do something about it. Trainers understand.

If you are at a pretty good level of fitness but you do the same exercises all the time, having an appointment once a month to spice up your routine is a great idea. Here’s why: Have you heard people talk about the need to ‘confuse your body’? What it basically means is that you don’t want you body to become too comfortable. This happens when you do the same thing all the time. Ideally, you should be challenging your body and ‘confusing’ it by doing different exercises with different levels of exertion. This is the best way to optimize your exercise. So, if you find yourself bored in your routine or not challenged but motivated enough to do it on your own, you would greatly benefit from a once a month appointment. The new material will keep you challenged and engaged.

Maybe you don’t need any instruction from a trainer because you’ve been exercising for years. Maybe you’re exercising consistently on your own and you don’t need the accountability. I would still suggest having a trainer that you check in with once a month. I’ll tell you why. Everybody needs a coach. Even professional athletes and Olympians need coaches. If you work out alone, it’s very easy to ignore injuries, fall into a run, get bored and not challenge yourself. Meeting with a trainer once a month is great way to mix up your workouts and keep them fresh and challenging. Also, a trainer will not let you ignore an injury.

Remember that the frequency of your training is not set in stone. Sometimes it may be more frequently, other times less frequently depending on what’s going on in your life. Your trainer will always work with you to do what is appropriate at any given time. If you’re lucky enough to have a trainer that you really enjoy and that’s helping you to get the results you want, they’re probably going to be in your life for a long time!

Dealing with anger is seldom easy, since people are continually facing problems and reasons for conflict. There is not one single person in this sometimes difficult world that has not gotten quite angry at some time or another.

Anger is an emotion that we all have to deal with. But anger comes in many forms: the root of anger is hatred, anxiety or frustration as a result of previous deception or disappointment, comes from bad anger management technique. This is true. However, true or not, even in the Bible it says that when Adam and Eve were created on Earth, the first problem was when Satan, in the form of a snake, lied, deceiving Eve. Once that lie became apparent, the world started suffering many problems, including violence, murder, war, shortages, disease, weather disasters and so forth.

Since that first lie, the world has become more chaotic and continues to worsen as the years roll by. We can examine how a lie can instigate anger by looking at one individual scenario. That person engaged in criminal activities, like stealing, writing bad checks, and selling prescription medications. Now that person had to embroider lying into the picture, since she felt that her behaviour and actions were only a means of survival.

So, she started lying to cover up her crimes. As the years went by, she became angry and could not deal with life, solely as a result of the way she was behaving, her way of thinking, the way she was conducting her life and her poor anger management technique. She began to react like anyone else suffering from uncontrolled anger would behave.

This included, demeaning others, insulting others, verbally and physically assaulting, threatening, belittling and mocking others. The woman was diagnosed with mental disorders, Post traumatic Stress Disorder and Bipolar. She also had health problems, including diabetes. Now, if we examine all the aspects of that person’s frustration and anger management technique, we see, if we search deep enough that her lying, which had caused the paranoia, was the root cause of all her behavioral problems.

Many people have a problem with anger management technique. Many of the people with post traumatic stress disorder act angrily reacting to a flashback in memory. This is right! Persons with post traumatic stress disorder often suppress their emotions. When they are violent or angered it is often because they are fighting the source that caused their trauma and not the person in their present vicinity.

But, we do not see this as the reason for the woman’s fury, since she did not make the problem public knowledge. Therefore, people would not think of post traumatic stress disorder as the cause, or at least reduce the possibility of it. So, now let’s take a look at diabetes, since this illness affects the nerves. The shortage of insulin creates other problems too, but many people with diabetes will become upset for practically no reason at all.

However, most of us do not act angrily, assault, insult or attack others. We should also look at why crimes are committed and then we would see that it is usually a serious behavioral problem that has come from lying. Therefore, when we look at this individual we have to deal with the underlying problems to stop her from lying and get her to move forward, avoiding episodes of frustration, anxiety and anger by using anger management technique.

Now, this person is in denial, which means that until the legal system makes her take steps to anger management technique, then she probably will not get seek herself. Furthermore, even if the criminal justice system does force her to get help, it probably will not work, since her denial has existed for probably many years. Now we are dealing with a real problem in anger management technique , since her behaviour is life long, which means extensive therapy will beneeded.

Anger is an emotion, but when it interferes with another persons life, it is a serious problem. This person is not hurting only one person, she is hurting everyone, since when she steals or writes bad checks, society pays with tax increases, as well as other increases. One of the biggest problems I have noticed with this type of person, is that the system and society will allow it to continue; only addressing it when the person is caught. Once the person is released then it continues again. This is a chain of events involving lack of control due to anger mis-management and bad anger management technique.
